For more than 30 years Rob Schrama has brought art into action as a vehicle for change. In his native country the Netherlands and abroad he organizes actions, performances and festivals for the benefit of a better world. He develops concepts for a hopeful future and while putting them into action he involves as many people as possible.

In the 1970’s as an artist and teacher of Visual Arts, Rob Schrama developed Art Confrontation, a method to transform art into a means for action. He further explored his experiences at the University of Amsterdam (Pedagogy and Art philosophy). This resulted in a book: Kunstkonfrontatie politiseert de kunst en esthetiseert de aktie (Art Confrontation; politicises Art and aestheticises Action). Universities, Colleges of Higher Education, and Art Academies regularly invite Rob Schrama to give guest lectures.

In the 1980’s Rob Schrama worked at an Art Teaching University in Amsterdam where he involved his students in activities of squat groups and the Peace Movement. Subsequently he became a professor of Action Art in East and West Berlin and in Kassel. With students he organized large-scale projects of art. During the Nineties, as Vice-president of the International Centre for Celebration, Rob Schrama visited and advised events all over the world. He also initiated festivals of his own: in Amsterdam, Amersfoort and Santa Fe he encouraged the inhabitants to participate in writing and poetry actions; transforming the whole city into one big open book and podium. In Potsdam he created Eutopia. The city is a model for a European utopia. Inhabitants and artists are currently working to establish it.

At the moment Rob Schrama regularly gives seminars and workshops in Germany. In the centre of the Netherlands, the province of Flevoland, he is aiming for the materialization of Eurowood, with meditation as a method of action, and with students who are helping to turn it into reality.

The Old City of Jerusalem is becoming a Pyramid of Light for peace. Although the authorities are obstructing its completion, a chain of light pyramids in cities around Jerusalem must give an example that it really is possible for people to co-exist in peace and tolerance. The Hague and Amsterdam have been given a Pyramid of Light already and in Rotterdam and Berlin Light Pyramids are currently being prepared.

In his place of residence in Amsterdam, Rob Schrama organizes projects for schools and performs Happenings. He also supports art initiative groups with the realization of their own plans, such as the Metamorphosis for Bicycles in a suburb, and also Marie de la Nuit through the nightlife of Amsterdam. In addition Rob Schrama makes his own visual arts.
